“Listen up, you’ve got to go! It’s incredibly funny and so much fun. We sang, we hit some wrong notes, we improvised, were surprised, laughed again, and experienced something magical. It’s a great idea for team-building nights, gatherings, and similar events. No prior singing skills are needed, and you don’t have to sing into a microphone, though the braver souls among us did. It’s liberating, warms both body and soul, and leaves you with a fantastic mood.”
- Sharon, participated in an open workshop in Haifa and later booked the workshop for her birthday celebration
Participants' feedback from the Workshop
"Shai, you are incredibly talented and amazing. A huge thank you—you’re charming, charismatic, fun, easygoing, beautiful, and deeply loved. We will continue to spread the word about you. Thank you for being a part of my celebration."
— Sharon, private gospel workshop for her birthday
"Wow, Shai, thank you!! It was amazing, just as I told you... People keep telling me how wonderful it was and how impressed they were with you."
— Roni, gospel workshop at Kibbutz Kfar Hanassi
Two consecutive workshops - for the professional choir and for the general kibbutz members
“It was truly wonderful. Shai was amazing and did a fantastic job. I arrived at the workshop feeling tired, but went home reenergized, with the rhythm of blues and gospel still with me... I even thought about keeping the song about freedom in our repertoire and practicing it.”
— Leah, gospel workshop for the Gush Etzion choir
"We attended a gospel workshop this evening with Shai Portugaly, a musician, creator, pianist, and singer.
Listen, you have to go. It’s incredibly funny and so much fun. We sang, missed notes, invented and improvised, were surprised, laughed again, and experienced pure magic. It’s a fantastic idea for team-building evenings, social gatherings, and similar events. You don’t need to know how to sing, and you don’t have to use a microphone, though the brave among us did. It’s liberating, warms both body and soul, and creates a wonderful mood.
Although Shai worked with our small group this time, her charisma can engage even large audiences. Well, with a last name like hers, you can tell talent is in her genes. Highly recommended."
— Sharon, gospel workshop in Haifa
Shai, your talent and dedication in running the worlshop were truly remarkable. Your expertise and passion for Gospel music created and engaging and enriching experience for all of us, cultivating a unique atmosphere of great enthusiasm, openness and creativity.

Who Am I?
The Woman Behind the Workshop
Hi! Nice to meet you.
I’m
Shai Portugaly
, a musician—singer, pianist, songwriter—and I’ve been teaching all of these for 15 years.
The truth is,
I grew up with gospel music!
It’s quite unusual to say that here in Israel… When I was young, my parents, the musicians Iris and Ofer Portugaly, were introduced to gospel music during a tour in Nigeria. They couldn’t believe their ears!! From that moment on, we couldn’t stop listening to it at home. I didn’t understand a word of English back then, but I was moved by the choir’s beautiful harmonies and the captivating groove, and I felt an indescribable joy, love, and upliftment.
A few years later, my parents started their own gospel choir, and as I grew up, I even joined them and started performing with them :)
A decade ago, I moved to the U.S. to study music
, where I had the opportunity to play with great gospel musicians who truly live it. One of the most inspiring things for me was seeing the reverence they have for music and how it truly gives them superpowers! They play and sing for something greater than themselves, bigger than their desire to be loved, bigger than their insecurities… It taught me a lot.
After 6 years in the U.S. (Boston and New York), nearly a year in South America (Ecuador and Costa Rica), and touring around the world with Grammy-winning artists and bands, I returned to Israel and brought the world with me.
Since returning to Israel, I have led
dozens of gospel workshops across the country
for various audiences. Every time, I am thrilled to hear the voices merge and create beautiful harmony from nothing. It is a great honor and pleasure for me to create waves of harmony in this place.

What is Gospel?
Gospel music originated in the U.S. among enslaved Black people. The constraints and hardships they faced compelled them to reinvent themselves and create music that would uplift them—music full of energy with messages of
gratitude, unity, and freedom
. This compelling music, which emerged from pain and struggle, has become
one of the most influential styles ever, transforming modern music
. The influence of soul music can be found in every musical genre abroad and even in pop and mainstream music here in Israel.

Yes!
I’ve conducted the workshop for various professional choirs and music students. In such cases, I offer a

What are the technical requirements?
The technical requirements are very basic, and the workshop can take place (almost) anywhere and under various conditions.
In general, we will need:
A space where participants can sit in a semi-circle (not in rows) so they can easily stand up and be arranged as a choir.
If the number of participants is very large, you can arrange them in a semi-circle with 2-3 rows.
A projector and screen - HDMI connection to display presentations, videos, and examples. — Highly recommended, but not essential.
A sound system, piano/keyboard - I can bring these if they are not available, or use yours if you have them.
>>Not sure if you have what we need? Enter your details in the form and we will get back to you, or call / text 0523221551
